I guess my collecting of
Publicity Photos, AKA Promo Shots, started back in the
late 60's. It was my interest in photography that drew my
fascination with these images. Here were photos of the
artists that usually came with the their 78 rpm, 45
rpm singles and later with their LP releases. They
were posed images, but they were given out so now you
could put a face with the great music you were listening
too! They were also used for autographing, record
releases,
reviews, artists
bios and live gigs. I began a bigger quest
of acquiring them through my trips to Chicago and
Detroit in the early 70's, or by just simply writing to a
particular artist that I liked at the time. The late
40's through to the early 70's are my favourite pictures.
Even now I still ask Canadian and International performers
in the Blues for a "promo" photo. As time goes
by I'm trying to restore these old Publicity Photos to the
quality of the day they were first handed out. Many more
will come in the near future, until then, please enjoy
these inspirational and historical images from the
past.
